Luitpoldturm
Luitpoldturm
South of Kaiserlautern, the Palatinate Forest stretches to the French border and far beyond. Right in the middle, the next highlight on our Palatinate bucket list. The Luitpold Tower on the Weißenberg near Merzalben offers the most breathtaking view over the dense treetops and the seemingly endless expanse of the forest. Here it quickly becomes clear that the Palatinate Forest is the largest contiguous forest area in Germany - forest as far as the eye can see.
But that alone does not make it so special. Whatever the season or time of day, the view from the tower never fails to enchant. When it snows, the treetops glisten in monochrome colours, creating a winter wonderland unlike any other.
In the early hours of the morning, the early morning mist is caught in the treetops and you float on the small platform of the tower above a bed of clouds that disappears as if by magic as the sun sets. Those who prefer the blackness of the night to the early morning hours will experience one of the most beautiful starry skies the region and probably all of Germany has to offer on starry nights. Those looking for real adventure stay all night on warm summer nights.
The Luitpold Tower is very difficult to reach by public transport, so we recommend travelling by car.
FACTS
How to get there
You really need a car here, because there is simply no good train connection to the Luitpold Tower. Grab a friend with a car and enjoy the trip together. It takes about 30 minutes from Kaiserslautern to get there.
You can park at the Hermesberger Hof car park. From here it is about 2 km on foot to the tower. The path is marked with a blue cross and takes about 15 minutes.
When?
Every season has its own special features. Whether at dawn on hot summer days, in winter with snow and ice or in a splendid blaze of colour in autumn. You can always enjoy the beauty of the Palatinate Forest here.

Allow at least 3 hours for your excursion if you are only planning to drive there and back and to climb the tower. However, you can also spend much more time there if you plan a picnic, stargazing or even an overnight stay.
