Karlstal - a beautiful small gorge

In the south of the city, the Karlstal-Gorge is a great place to cool off on hot summer days. This nature reserve should not be missing from our bucket list as it turns out to be a truly enchanted place - criss-crossed by the Mosalbe, adorned with rock giants, numerous small waterfalls and an ancient tree population, the gorge invites you to a particularly dreamy hike - perhaps even the most beautiful in the Palatinate Forest. The path really invites you to linger, whether with your feet in the stream, relaxing in the wooden pavilion or over hill and dale, the forest stream atmosphere is really refreshing.

Highlights & Tips

Café Unterhammer offers a wonderful selection of cakes and sweet treats. It also serves home-brewed beer from its own brewery.

At the starting points, Naturfreundehaus Finsterbrunntal and Klug'sche Mühle, there are sumptuous portions and good home cooking in the Palatinate style for refreshment before or after the hike.

ÖPNV Variant 1: Bus line 160 to Schopp (Abzw. Karlstal), then 2km walk to the start of a circular trail at the Finsterbrunnertal Naturfreundehaus
Walking time: 3h, ca. 10 km Circuit

ÖPNV Variant 2: Bus line 170 in the direction of Bürgerhaus Geiselberg, stop Bartelsberg Trippstadt, the remaining 200m on foot to the entrance Karlstalschlucht (ATTENTION only 1x daily at 14:10h)

When

A visit is especially recommended on hot summer days. The forest and clear water provide pleasant cooling.

If you want to enjoy a fairytale winter landscape, you should come when there is snow. When it has been really cold for a few days, fine icicles hang down from the rock formations and the banks of the stream glisten icy. But beware, of course, it is then also particularly slippery and slippery. Good footwear is a very much needed here.

Duration

If you travel by bus, you should plan between 5 and 6 hours. By car, of course, it's a little faster. In general, the duration of your stay depends of course on whether and if so, which hike you do.

Equipment

Good shoes for the hike, especially important if you are traveling in winter. A small picnic, something to (warm) drink and a good camera or cell phone. In summer it is worth packing a small towel. The small stream invites you to cool your feet.
