The taste of Pfalz

What is typical German cuisine? A few classics come immediately to mind, but it quickly becomes clear that it varies greatly from region to region and that each region has its own "best of" in the kitchen. And that brings us to our Buckelist destination No. 5 - The Tast of Pfalz.

Hearty, spicy and far removed from the haute cuisine of the neighbouring French. Influenced by the countryside and the many farmers in the region, Palatinate cuisine features plenty of potato and flour dishes, lots of meat and everything the region's fields have to offer. Generous portions and with a reputation as "poor man's food", however, they have long been found on the menus of numerous restaurants in the area.

A true classic is definitely the Pfälzer Saumagen. A meat dish made of potatoes, sausage meat and numerous spices and herbs that is placed in a hot water bath to cook. With dark gravy and plenty of sauerkraut, it is an absolute classic.

The dishes of typical Palatinate cuisine are often very meat-heavy, but veggies don't miss out either. The so-called Arme Ritter (poor knight) is a dish to melt in your mouth. A dessert made of white bread, milk and eggs, fried in hot fat and served with vanilla sauce and seasonal fruit, it is a highlight for anyone who likes things a little sweeter.

Mehlknepp, Grumbeerstambes, Lewwerknepp or Quetschekuche, are not only a linguistic delight. Both in Kaiserslautern itself, but especially in the surrounding area, you can order and try the typical dishes in many restaurants. For us, this is a goal on the bucket list that invites you to fulfil it several times. Taste the delicious dishes, take a seat in the mostly rustic restaurants, restaurants for outings and huts on a hike and experience the real taste of the Palatinate.

Here, too, we have made a small pre-selection to make it a little easier to get started. Nevertheless, there are numerous good restaurants that are more than recommendable, but we could not list them all here.

The "Panorama-Gasthof Stemler" is located in the small village of Eulenbis and is the starting point for extensive hiking tours, excursions by bike or simply to end a relaxing evening with good food and a cool wine on the terrace.

The "Schwarze Fuchs" is a restaurant in the middle of the forest near Annweiler am Trifels on the southern wine route. Here, typical Palatinate cuisine is interpreted in a new and modern way without losing its charm and distinctive taste.

If you don't want to go quite so far, simply walk into the Lautrer city centre. At "Spinnrädl" you will find the delicious dishes of the Palatinate on the menu (in both German and English).

FACTS

How to get there

Eulenbiß - Panorama-Gasthof Stemler

The best way to reach the inn is to take the RB66 from Kaiserlautern main station. It's only about 20 minutes to Hirschhorn station and there are hourly connections. From here you can start a short hike on the Teufelswanderweg (Devil's Hiking Trail) and reach the inn after about 45 minutes.

Forsthaus Annweiler - Black Fox

The restaurant is located in the middle of the Palatinate Forest and is therefore not easily accessible by public transport. As with some of the other destinations on our bucket list, you will need a car. The best way to get there is to use Google Maps and enter the address of the restaurant: Forsthaus Annweiler 1, 76855 Annweiler am Trifels.

The journey takes about 40 minutes. However, the slightly longer journey is worth it and a visit to the Schwarzer Fuchs can be wonderfully combined with a hike to the nearby Kirschfels.

Kaiserlautern - Spinnrädel

The Spinnrädel inn is located in the centre of Kaiserlautern and can be reached on foot. At Schillerstraße 1, the beautiful old half-timbered house is already an absolute eye-catcher and adds to the charm of the restaurant.
