The rating scale of the International Climbing Federation and part of the SAC scales. It is represented here with Arabic numerals, which can also be upgraded by a plus (+) or downgraded by a minus (-). One digit therefore contains three levels of difficulty. Intermediate steps can also be added for a more precise definition. 7+/8- is then a difficult 7+ to easy 8-.
The UIAA scale is mainly used in sport climbing in Europe and preferably in western Germany. It is also very popular in climbing gyms.
The scale theoretically starts at 1 and now goes up to 11+. However, grades 1-2 do not necessarily require the use of hands and are therefore negligible in sport climbing. Very, very roughly, you can define the ranges 3-6 for beginners, 6-7 for advanced climbers, 8-10 for very good climbers and everything above that for the crème de la crème of climbing.
