The taste of Pfalz

What is typical German cuisine? A few classics immediately spring to mind, but it quickly becomes clear that it varies greatly from region to region and that each region has its own "best of" in the kitchen. And that brings us to our Buckelist destination No. 5 - The Tast of Pfalz.

Hearty, spicy and far removed from the haute cuisine of the neighboring French. Characterized by the rural landscape and the many farmers in the region, Palatinate cuisine is rich in potato and pastry dishes, lots of meat and everything that the region's fields have to offer. Generous portions and a reputation as "poor people's food" have long been found on the menus of numerous restaurants in the area.

The Pfälzer Saumagen is definitely a true classic. A meat dish made from potatoes, sausage meat and numerous spices and herbs that is placed in a hot water bath to cook. With dark gravy and plenty of sauerkraut, it is an absolute classic.

The dishes of typical Palatinate cuisine are often very meat-heavy, but veggies are not neglected either. The so-called Arme Ritter is a dish to melt in your mouth. A dessert made from white bread, milk and eggs, fried in hot fat and served with vanilla sauce and seasonal fruit, it is a highlight for anyone who likes things a little sweeter.

Mehlknepp, Grumbeerstambes, Lewwerknepp or Quetschekuche are not just a linguistic delight. In Kaiserslautern itself, but especially in the surrounding area, you can order and try the typical dishes in many restaurants. For us, this is a bucket list destination that invites you to try it several times. Taste your way through the delicious dishes, take a seat in the mostly rustic restaurants, excursion restaurants and huts on a hike and experience the real taste of the Palatinate.

We have also made a small preselection here to make it a little easier to get started. Nevertheless, there are numerous good restaurants that are more than worth recommending, but we have not been able to list them all here.

The "Panorama-Gasthof Stemler" is located in the small village of Eulenbis and is the starting point for extensive hiking tours, excursions by bike or simply to round off a relaxing evening with good food and a cool wine on the terrace.

The "Schwarze Fuchs" is a restaurant in the middle of the forest near Annweiler am Trifels on the southern wine route. Here, typical Palatinate cuisine is interpreted in a new and modern way without losing its charm and unmistakable taste.

If you don't want to go that far, just walk into the center of Lautr. At "Spinnrädl" you will find the delicious dishes of the Palatinate on the menu (in both German and English).

FACTS

There & away

Eulenbiß - Panorama-Gasthof Stemler

The best way to reach the inn is to take the RB66 from Kaiserlautern main station. It is only about 20 minutes to Hirschhorn station and the connection runs every hour. From here, you can start a short hike along the Teufelswanderweg trail and reach the inn in around 45 minutes.

Forsthaus Annweiler - Black Fox

The restaurant is located in the middle of the Palatinate Forest and is therefore not easy to reach by public transport. As with some of the other destinations on our bucket list, you will need a car here. It's best to use Google Maps to navigate and enter the address of the restaurant: Forsthaus Annweiler 1, 76855 Annweiler am Trifels.

The journey takes about 40 minutes. However, the slightly longer journey is worth it and a visit to the Schwarzer Fuchs can be wonderfully combined with a hike to the nearby Kirschfels.

The Gasthaus Spinnrädel is located in the heart of Kaiserlautern's city center and can be easily reached on foot. Located at Schillerstraße 1, the beautiful old half-timbered house is an absolute eye-catcher and adds to the charm of the restaurant.
