Of course, a piece of history should not be missing on our little journey through the region. And our bucket list destination no. 9 is about nothing less than the birthplace of democracy in Germany. Hambach Castle is enthroned high up on the edge of the Palatinate Forest, with an incomparable panoramic view over the Southern Wine Route and the Upper Rhine Plain. Here, the edge of the Haardt, a steeply sloping mountain range, borders the Palatinate Forest at its eastern end and you have a magnificent view of the sea of vines to which the wine route owes its name.
The castle, with its pretty outdoor facilities and interesting museum about its history, the Hambach Festival and the birth of democracy, make this excursion well worthwhile. A short hike leads from the small wine village of Hambach up to the castle in just over 30 minutes. As soon as you arrive, it becomes clear that the castle is a tourist attraction and an integral part of German history.
The former castle, which was converted into a palace at a late stage and is still being renovated and restored to this day, is home to a small restaurant with a great view as well as numerous guided tours. If you book in advance via the castle's website, these are also available in English or French.
If you have a little more time, the area around the castle is ideal for long walks and sporty hikes. The hiking trails are well signposted and there are further uphill stretches from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of the castle and the lowlands.
