2023 - The first expedition

Day 1

On April 22, 2023 in the early hours of the morning, the first expedition team set off after breakfast together on the Kaiserslautern campus. Together with Prof. Dr. Arnd Poetzsch-Heffter (President at RPTU in Kaiserslautern), the first 20 kilometers were covered at a brisk pace with the prospect of a good meal. Finally, at the House of Sustainability, they cooked together with Simone Kiefer (deputy director of the HdN) on a campfire and fortified themselves for the last 10 kilometers. They also compared the ecological footprints of different dishes and discussed sustainable nutrition. Freshly rested and accompanied by Hans-Peter Ehrhart (Head of the Research Institute for Forest Ecology and Forestry), the last stage of the day began. With brief inputs on the health of the forest, the remaining kilometers flew by. Once we arrived at the Geiswiesen, the busy preparations for the night began. The tent was set up. This was followed by intensive discussions about light pollution. The exhausted expedition participants then quickly prepared their evening meal before slipping into their sleeping bags.

"Super tour, super group, super forest and environment...and a trail that connects Lautern and Landau, on the forest floor, but also in the memories of the participants."

Prof. Dr. Arnd Poetzsch-Heffter, President of the RPTU in Kaiserslautern

Day 2

The fog still hid the treetops as the last day of the expedition dawned. Strengthened by freshly prepared porridge, the first ascent was tackled immediately. At the Taubensuhl forester's lodge, we had a little refreshment and briefly but intensively dealt with the ecological footprint in a biodidactics seminar led by Siegfried Weiter (forester). From the Wald-Weinberg border in Frankweiler, the team was accompanied by Stefan Asam (Director of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Forestry Department) and Michael Leschnig (Head of the Haardt Forestry Office). They mingled with the expedition team and held intensive discussions about the sustainable development of the Palatinate Forest. On the last few kilometers, the participants showed the first signs of exhaustion, but on the way through the vineyards, with the city of Landau always in view, even this last effort was mastered. Arriving at the Landau campus, the team was given a fitting welcome by Prof. Dr. Gabriele E. Schaumann (President of the RPTU in Landau). In addition to a sporting challenge, which was successfully mastered, a lot of knowledge was gained about the Palatinate Forest. And above all, a community and cross-campus friendships developed from a motley group of students!

"The event was truly spectacular. It was exhausting, but with the sympathy, love, warmth and friendliness of all the participants, it was accomplished. Many thanks to the organizers for all the great work, especially to Felix and Malte!"
