Destination No. 3 on our Palatinate bucket list is known far beyond the borders of the Palatinate. A must for anyone who wants to experience a real regional folk festival in addition to ticking off the bucket list. The Dürkheim sausage market is in a league of its own. The largest Wine Fest in the world takes place in our immediate neighborhood. On the 2nd and 3rd weekend in September, it attracts over 600,000 visitors to the small town of Bad Dürkheim. Large tents with live music and the dense crowds on the fairground are reminiscent of the world-famous Oktoberfest in Munich, only in Palatinate and with wonderfully refreshing wine spritzers instead of wheat beer. Numerous rides and regional delicacies make the festival a real experience.
The festival attracts visitors from all over the world to the small spa town of Bad Dürkheim. Fireworks accompanied by music on the first weekend and the exhilarating final fireworks display on the last evening are highlights, as is wine tasting on the Ferris wheel with breathtaking views over the festival grounds and the surrounding countryside. There are even guided tours of the market, which go into more detail about the culture and history of the festival. If you really want to get into the thick of the action, you have free entry to the large festival tents and can choose your own location for the evening according to your own taste in music.
