A real highlight north of Kaiserslautern is the trolley route between Altenglan and Staudernheim! On the disused railroad line, you can cycle through the beautiful landscape of the Palatinate Highlands on various trolleys. The size of your group can vary depending on the type of vehicle. On the normal bicycle trolley, only two people pedal and two others can sit back and enjoy the ride. A conference trolley, on the other hand, fits 7 people. The route leads through the beautiful Glan valley, past old railroad station buildings and many beer gardens that invite you to take a break. The trolley is simply lifted out of the tracks and placed to one side so that those following have a free ride.
As the route is single-track, you cycle from Altenglan to Staudernheim on odd-numbered days and in the other direction on even-numbered days. The total distance of 40 km is a real challenge, which is why we recommend half the distance of 20 km. Here you start in Lauterecken and cycle to Staudernheim or vice versa. With the half route, you have enough time for a picnic by the Glan, a detour to the beer garden or an ice cream in the old town of Meisenheim. The respective terminus stations (Lauterecken and Staudernheim) are easy to reach by public transport and there is always a connection back to the starting station.
The trolleys must be booked in advance on the provider's website. Demand is particularly high at weekends, so you should try to make an appointment a few weeks in advance.
There and away
To Lauterecken-Grumbach station, take the RB 66 train from Kaiserslautern station, which runs hourly on the outward and return journeys. From here, the route to the trolley station is already signposted and only takes a few minutes.
Once you have arrived in Staudernheim on the trolley, hand it in at the terminus and make your way back to Lauterecken or directly to Kaiserslautern.
To do this, take bus route 260 and get back on the RB 66 to Kaiserslautern in Lauterecken.
Of course, this also works in the other direction, depending on your chosen starting station. Make sure that you start your tour early in the morning, as the last connections back to Kaiserslautern leave at around 21:30.
